New par three 14th hole at Mornington GC
Mornington Golf Club – Design advisory works
Few golf courses in Australia boast a superior setting to the Mornington Golf Club, one of Victoria's genuine bayside hidden gems. While the terrain in places is steep, and the soils are less conducive to firm, fast golf conditions than the courses along the southern Mornington Peninsula, there is still much to recommend here. Holes like 7 and 15 have always been spectacular.
My consulting work at Mornington started several years ago with the creation of a new par three 19th hole, and has continued, alongside Ben Davey, with additional redesign works undertaken on holes 6, 7, 9 and 18.
The work at Mornington has been completed slowly and in-house, with the assistance of a supportive management team and passionate Dad’s Army of member volunteers. The aim is for incremental improvement over a number of years.
Mornington will never compete with the Sandbelt courses in Melbourne, but it’s great fun and spectacular at the same time. Plus the membership is fantastic.
There are still a handful of sidehill holes at Mornington that require remedial works, including holes like 10 and 14 which have enormous potential, but Victorian golfers can enjoy the best of its bayside holes right now. Few courses in the state can match the fun and beauty of holes 6, 7, 15, 16 and 19.
